NATURAL GAS SAFETY INSIDE YOUR HOME
Natural gas is the cleanest, most affordable and efficient fuel to use inside your home. Most of our residential gas customers use natural gas for heating their homes, cooking, heating water and drying clothes. Natural gas can also be used for grills, generators, fireplaces, pool or spa heaters and gas lights. Whatever your purpose for using natural gas, keep in mind natural gas is colorless, odorless, lighter than air, and non-toxic. Breathing natural gas is not harmful to you as long as there is an adequate supply of fresh air to breathe along with it. Natural gas by itself will not burn; but with the proper mixture of gas and air, combined with an ignition source, combustion can occur. To keep you, our customer safe, we add an odorant that smells like rotten eggs to warn you that natural gas is present and, if ignited, could result in personal injury or property damage.
If you smell a FAINT odor inside your home or workplace, check to see if any gas appliance has been left on, or if a pilot light has been extinquished, which could cause the odor (like rotten eggs). If the odor persists, TAKE NO CHANCE, get out of the house immediately, and then call us from a neighbor’s house or from a cell phone outside of your home or workplace. If you smell a STRONG or PERSISTENT ODOR OF GAS inside your home or workplace, or if you hear a HISSING SOUND of escaping gas:

SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR GAS APPLIANCES:
Make sure that you observe basic safety rules when you operate your natural gas appliances inside your home. Below are a few simple steps to follow to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones:
1) Keep boxes, laundry or other materials from restricting air flow to appliance.
2) Make sure vent hoods, pipes, or flues are not blocked or corroded.
3) Make sure your gas appliance is installed correctly.
4) NEVER use a gas appliance incorrectly. For example, do not use your gas stove to heat a room or use a gas or charcoal grill indoors.
5) Have your natural gas furnaces, fireplaces, or space heaters inspected every year. Other appliances, such as water heaters, clothes dryers, ranges and cook tops, should be checked for proper operation every two years.
